Growing up, Devante Cuthbertson assumed he might have to leave his North Carolina hometown to pursue a career, but a new multi-billion-dollar Toyota battery plant is offering him a reason to stay put. The 28-year-old from Greensboro is among students of an apprenticeship program at Guilford Technical Community College, working three days weekly with the automaker with an eye on future employment. "At one point, I felt maybe I''d go to a different state or a different country and try different job avenues," Cuthbertson told AFP. But when the Toyota tie-in "came along, it was like wow, maybe North Carolina isn''t that bad." The United States is seeing an investment surge as President Joe Biden pushes to rebuild "hollowed out" industrial communities and grow domestic supply chains in key sectors like electric vehicles (EVs), batteries and semiconductors. Besides appealing to blue-collar voters in crucial swing states like North Carolina ahead of November''s presidential election, Biden aims to counter China''s dominance in green tech industries.
Even though semiconductors and microchips are such an integral part of the global economy , there are still some chip stocks to avoid. It’s not because of a lack of demand or even customers, considering that nearly every country in the world needs microchips for one reason or another. Rather, the warning signs can be more insidious for retail investors who may not be the most familiar with the chip industry. Sometimes, it can come down to intangible factors, like a lack of experienced personnel or unpredictable shifts in governmental policies. Other times, the microchip company may have everything it needs to succeed but simply doesn’t due to customer demands. I’ve had the pleasure of touring some of the world’s premium chip manufacturers, and I realized one thing about how they’re made. No matter the success rate or efficiency of a microchip production line, anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Intel (INTC) Many analysts have been bearish on Intel (NASDAQ: INTC ) and its role in bringing chip manufacturing back to America.
Futures Rise As Dovish Fed Boosts Sentiment, Reverse Bizarre Post-Powell Slide After a bizarre reversal when US stocks first slumped and then dumped after Powell''s very dovish FOMC statement and press conference, US equity futures have regained their footing this morning and advanced as traders took comfort from the Fed’s signal that there’s no plan to raise interest rates and looked ahead to Apple’s earnings after the close. As of 7:40am, S&P 500 contracts climbed 0.7%, while Nasdaq 100 contracts add 0.9% with Apple, Amazon.com and Nvidia all posting small gains in pre-market trading. The yen was the center of attention in foreign exchange, after what appeared to be another intervention by Japanese authorities to support the currency. Treasuries extended gains following the dovish remarks from Powell, which coupled with the Fed tapering QT by more than expected, soothed fears of a rate hike. Traders now turn their attention to a string of US data, including jobless claims and factory orders on Thursday and the nonfarm payrolls report on Friday.
