The Federal Reserve fined Green Dot Bank $44 million for a deficient consumer compliance risk management program and unfair practices. The bank, which partners with Apple and Walmart, saw its stock fall by 5.7%. The fine…
NEW YORK — Walmart has spent three years overhauling its mix of adult apparel to make it stylish as well as sensible for middle America. Now, the nation’s largest retailer is seizing the back-to-school shopping season to take another shot at fashion respectability.
Green Dot Bank, a small Utah-based bank that backs financial products at some of America’s largest companies — including Apple and Walmart — today agreed to pay a $44 million fine previously disclosed by the Federal Reserve. Green’s stock fell 5.7% today to $9.26, now 85% below its all-time high of $63.44 hit in October 2020. The fine does not impose any restrictions on the bank’s ability to serve its existing customers. In a statement issued this afternoon, the Fed said the fine was due to “numerous unfair and deceptive practices and a flawed consumer compliance risk management program.” According to the statement, Green Dot violated consumer law in its marketing, sale and servicing of prepaid debit card products and its provision of payment services for tax preparation. Specifically, Green Dot failed to adequately disclose tax refund processing fees for tax preparation services offered on a third-party website. Green Dot previously announced it had set aside $20 million to help cover the fine.
Defensive stocks are stealing the spotlight again following Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s recent comments. In his address at the Economic Club of Washington D.C., Powell talked about the precarious state of the economy. His remarks emphasized the stickiness in inflation, policy uncertainties, and large deficits amid full employment. Hence, given the breadth of variables impacting the economy, it seems like a tough road ahead for those expecting quick monetary easing. The Federal Reserve plans to approach policy decisions “meeting by meeting,” based on evolving data, adding to the allure of defensive stocks. Defensive stocks can effectively maintain stability irrespective of economic conditions. Moreover, these stocks outperform during an economic downturn as consumers prioritize essential purchases. However, their performance is perhaps less notable during economic peaks, but they continue offering stable returns and healthy dividend payouts. Here are three that perfectly fit the bill and offer a safe harbor amidst the economic and political uncertainty.
Green Dot Bank, the banking-as-a-Service partner to some of America’s biggest companies agreed to pay the fine for policies they say they fixed years ago.
Green Dot Corp., a company that partners with Walmart to sell prepaid debit cards at the retail giant, has been fined $44 million by the Federal Reserve for "numerous" alleged failures that harmed consumers over a period of at least five years.
