Escalating geopolitical tensions have put the aerospace and defense (“A&D”) industry at a pivotal juncture. With global security concerns at the forefront of national agendas, governments have increased spending on advanced weaponry, sophisticated surveillance systems and cutting-edge military technologies. As a result, Wall Street has been paying close attention to aerospace and defense stocks to buy. A recent study by Deloitte highlights a robust outlook for the sector. Fueled by global developments, the U.S. defense budget has climbed 3.2% year-over-year (YOY) to a staggering $842 billion for 2024. Another study projects a compound annual growth rate (“CAGR”) of 8.2% for the A&D sector worldwide from 2023 to 2030. Thus, this article introduces three aerospace & defense stocks to buy to capitalize on this dynamic industry. Lockheed Martin (LMT) Source: Ken Wolter / Shutterstock.com The global A&D behemoth Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT ) operates through four main segments : Aeronautics, Missiles and Fire Control, Rotary and Mission Systems and Space.
Although geopolitical tensions are high and defense spending is generally on the rise globally, not all defense stocks companies will benefit. Some defense contractors may face challenges. Those include supply chain disruptions, labor shortages or reputational risks that could impact performance and prices. Moreover, the defense industry is heavily dependent on government contracts and budget allocations. And those can be highly unpredictable and subject to political shifts. Companies that rely heavily on a few key contracts or have a narrow product portfolio may be more vulnerable to changes in government priorities or spending cuts. More specifically, some defense stocks have a mix of weakening fundamentals and overvalued natures. Let’s explore some of those that investors should sell this month. RTX Corporation (RTX) Source: JHVEPhoto / Shutterstock.com RTX Corporation (NYSE: RTX ) is known for its aerospace and defense products. Quite recently, it faced a significant setback with a defect discovered in 1,200 of its jet engines.
Global military spending for 2023 touched record highs of $2.44 trillion. On a year-on-year basis, defense spending increased by 6.8%. That does not come as a surprise, as there are multiple points of geopolitical friction globally. It’s also likely that defense spending will continue to increase at a healthy pace through the decade. From an investment perspective, it’s a good opportunity to consider exposure to some of the best defense stock picks. If we look at some top defense companies, the order backlog has been swelling. Further, companies are investing in next-generation defense technology. A swelling backlog implies clear revenue and cash flow visibility. Investment in R&D will ensure that growth remains healthy as new technology replaces the existing in the coming years. Therefore, the overall outlook for the defense sector is positive. Even with macroeconomic headwinds, I don’t see a slowdown in defense spending. As a matter of fact, global defense spending increased even during the pandemic years.
