Why Diversifying ESOPs/RSUs Matter

Re-invest your RSUs into the US & Global markets

Concentration Risk

When your salary, future bonuses, and long-term savings all depend on the same company’s stock, a single event - earnings miss, leadership change, or market shift - could impact everything at once.

Concentration Risk

Estate Tax Trap

Non-US residents may be subject to US estate (inheritance) tax on US-domiciled assets exceeding $60k, with progressive tax rates that can go up to 40%, depending on the total value of assets held at the time of death.

Estate Tax Trap

Missed Global Exposure

Owning RSUs means exposure to a single company, often within one sector and geography. True diversification spreads risk across markets, industries, and cycles, helping your portfolio capture broader global growth beyond your employer’s stock.

"I've been a Vested customer since it was unimaginable to buy US shares from India. Vested made it possible. Many receive RSUs/ESOPs as compensation, but divesting meant huge bank fees. Thanks to the team, I transferred my funds easily and within a day! Now, I can diversify without hefty bank charges. Thank you, Vested team!"

FAQ's

Have questions about ESOP / RSU transfers and investing?

Is it legal to transfer funds from my ESOP/RSU account?

Under 2022 Finance Ministry Overseas Investment rules, ESOP/RSU shares in listed companies are treated as Overseas Portfolio Investments if they are below 10% ownership. Under RBI's LRS, sale proceeds can be reinvested in other listed stocks within 180 days.

Can I transfer funds from my ESOP/RSU account?

In many cases, yes—after vesting or sale through your plan, you can initiate a transfer or wire of USD to your Vested brokerage account, subject to your employer broker’s process and any holding periods. Steps differ by broker; use the in-app ESOP/RSU transfer guides for your institution.

What are the charges associated with the funds transfer via RSU/ESOP/ESPP account?

Normally, the sender broker imposes a one-time wire transfer fee when you transfer the funds. This fee typically ranges from $25 to $65 per wire depending on the broker where you hold your RSU/ESOP/ESPPs.

What are the tax implications of ESOP/RSU transfers?

Tax treatment depends on your residency, how and when your equity is taxed at vest or sale, and whether you are moving cash or securities. Obligations may arise in both the US and India. Vested offers localized tax reports to support Indian filings, but you should consult a qualified tax advisor for advice tailored to your situation.
