How to Transfer Your US Stocks From INDmoney to Vested

If you’re holding US stocks on INDmoney and considering moving them to Vested, here’s some good news. IndMoney accounts are held with either Alpaca or DriveWealth, while Vested holds customer accounts through DriveWealth and can accept incoming transfers from both brokers.

Vested has a dedicated Asset Transfer Module that lets you initiate the transfer directly from your Vested account, making it a smooth and straightforward way to move your US Stock portfolio.

Before you begin

  • The name on your INDmoney account and your Vested account must match exactly. Third-party transfers aren’t allowed.
  • Keep your INDmoney DriveWealth account number handy. You’ll need to enter it during the transfer.
  • Ensure you have at least $100 in your IndMoney account to cover a possible transfer-out fee, since this varies by broker and isn’t always disclosed upfront. This is only applicable in case your holdings are with Alpaca Securities.

How to initiate the transfer

  • Open the Vested app and log in to your account using the Email ID registered with Vested.
  • Click on “Transfer & Wallet”.
  • Select “Transfer from Another Broker”

  • Select your broker from the dropdown, DriveWealth or Alpaca, depending on which one your IndMoney account is on
  • Enter “IndMoney” as the platform name, and your account number. Note that this isn’t the account number shown on your IndMoney home screen. Go to IndMoney’s US Stocks tab, then Manage, then US Stocks Reports, then US Trades Report, and pull it from there instead.

  • Choose your transfer type: Full transfer (cash and shares together) or Partial transfer.
  • Add your full name as your digital signature to confirm the request.
  • Tap “Initiate Transfer”.

If you’d rather speak to someone first, you can tap “Request Callback” instead.

Fees and timeline

Vested does not charge any fees for share or cash transfers. IndMoney may charge a transfer-out fee, which varies by account type and is not always disclosed upfront. DriveWealth-to-DriveWealth transfers are free. Please ensure you have sufficient cash in your IndMoney account and confirm any transfer-out fees with your broker.

  • DriveWealth: $0
  • Alpaca: $100

Once approved, the transfer usually wraps up within a few business days.

What carries over

Your cost basis (original purchase price and date) is preserved, so an in-kind transfer like this one does not trigger a taxable event in the way a sell-and-rebuy would.

What can and cannot be transferred

Transferable: US-listed stocks, ETFs, and cash balances, either in full or partially. Not transferable: fractional shares. These need to be liquidated or left behind before you initiate the transfer.

Common reasons a transfer gets held up

  • Mismatch in name across the two accounts
  • Incorrect or incomplete DriveWealth account number
  • Pending or unsettled trades on the sending account

About Vested

Vested was founded in 2019 by Viram Shah as one of India’s earliest platforms built specifically for making global investing accessible to Indian investors. Today, Vested operates within regulated frameworks in both India and the US.

In the US, Vested holds an Investment Advisor registration with the SEC, while its affiliate, VF Securities, is a FINRA-regulated broker-dealer. In India, Vested holds Global Access Provider (GAP) and broker-dealer registrations with IFSCA at GIFT City, along with a Payment Service Provider (PSP) authorization for facilitating cross-border money movement.

The platform now has over $1 billion in assets under administration and has processed more than $6 billion in trading volume. Beyond the regulatory credentials, here’s what actually changes for you once your holdings move to Vested.

Benefits of moving to Vested

Individually titled accounts. Your US stocks and cash sit in a brokerage account held in your own name with VF Securities, Inc. (And Drivewealth as underlying broker), rather than in a pooled account.

SIPC protection applies to you directly. Coverage of up to $500,000 sits with your individual account, not shared pro-rata across a larger pool.

A direct relationship with your broker. There’s no intermediary layer between you and the entity holding your securities.

More than just stocks and ETFs. The same account also gives you access to:

  • Managed Portfolios — theme-based portfolios built by Vested’s in-house research team, starting at $1, for investors who’d rather not pick individual stocks
  • Private Markets — pre-IPO access to companies like OpenAI, SpaceX, and Stripe, with minimum investments starting at $10,000
  • Global Funds — 350+ UCITS funds from managers like BlackRock, Fidelity, and JP Morgan, covering 50+ countries beyond just the US
  • ESOP/RSU management — a dedicated flow to manage equity you already hold with your employer, alongside your other holdings

So a transfer isn’t just about moving your existing portfolio. It also opens up a wider set of products under one account if you choose to use them later.

Transfer timelines and fees depend on the policies of the sending broker and the underlying settlement system, and can change. Please verify your account details and any tax implications before initiating a transfer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is IndMoney's broker?

DriveWealth or Alpaca, depending on your account.

Do I need to contact IndMoney to start the transfer?

No. The receiving broker initiates an ACATS transfer, so the request happens entirely from the Vested side. You’d only need to reach out to IndMoney if something gets stuck along the way.

Will I owe capital gains tax on the transfer?

An in-kind transfer like this isn’t a sale, so it shouldn’t trigger capital gains tax. It’s worth confirming with your CA, and keeping your IndMoney transaction history handy for future tax filing regardless.

Does IndMoney charge a fee for the transfer?

Yes, if your account is on Alpaca. DriveWealth-to-DriveWealth transfers are free, but Alpaca-side transfers currently cost $100.

What happens if my transfer fails?

The most common reason is an incorrect account number, a name mismatch, or unsettled trades. Double-check these before submitting to avoid a failed request.
